This book discusses Business Fundamentals: Understanding the Modern Business World. It includes an introduction to the business world, the external and internal business environment, business ethics and social responsibility, entrepreneurship and innovation in business, management in business organizations, product and service marketing, and operations and production management.
Business is one of the primary activities shaping the economic, social, and institutional life of society. Nearly all human needs in daily life are linked to business activities, either directly or indirectly. The food we consume, the clothing we wear, the housing we occupy, education and healthcare services, transportation,
communications, banking, and various digital services are all part of a constantly evolving business ecosystem. Understanding business goes beyond simply viewing companies as profit-making organizations. Business needs to be understood as a system that connects resources, people, technology, markets, organizations, governments, and society to create and distribute value.
Business can be understood as an activity or organization that provides goods and services to consumers with the aim of creating value and achieving economic results. Business is an organization that seeks to generate profits by providing goods and services desired by its customers (Gitman et al., 2018). This definition contains two fundamental elements: the provision of goods or services needed by customers and a profit orientation. However, in the contemporary business context, these two elements need to be understood more broadly. Profit is indeed important for the sustainability of a business organization, but a company’s ability to survive in the long term is increasingly determined by its ability to create value for customers, employees, shareholders, business partners, society, and the environment.
