This book discusses the study of the Qur’an and Hadith for contextual understanding. It includes an introduction to the study of the Qur’an and Hadith, the history of the codification of the Qur’an and Hadith, the science of interpretation and contextual approaches, classification, validity and relevance, the study of the Qur’an and Hadith for contextual understanding, the contextualization of hadith in modern life, social issues in the Qur’an and Hadith, and education, ethics, and social justice from the perspective of the Qur’an and Hadith.
The Quran and Hadith are the two primary sources of Islamic teachings, serving as the foundation for the lives of Muslims worldwide. Besides serving as guidelines for worship, they also serve as sources of values, ethics, law, education, and guidance for building a just and dignified social life. Throughout the history of Islamic civilization, the study of the Quran and Hadith has developed into a broad and in-depth discipline, giving rise to various branches of knowledge such as tafsir (interpretation of the Quran), ulumul Qur’an (theology of the Qur’an), ulumul hadith (theology of the hadith), ushul fiqh (the principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and contemporary Islamic hermeneutics.
In the modern era, studying the Qur’an and Hadith is no longer sufficient merely in textual terms; it also requires a contextual approach to ensure a relevant understanding of Islam’s universal messages, keeping pace with changing times. Social change, technological advancement, humanitarian issues, and global challenges require Muslims to be able to read the sacred texts wisely, deeply, and proportionately. Therefore, an introductory study of the Qur’an and Hadith is crucial as a foundation for understanding how the Prophet’s revelation and traditions can be appropriately implemented in contemporary life.
